Sandi S., Jul 7, 2009, 9:26PM EDTSounds absolutely terrifying, Josh! I went to Bosnia in the mid-90's, but even I wouldn't go to N.O. now. :) Maybe I am over-reacting!
Hope you are studying law at Tulane. You can make a difference! -
Cathi L., Jul 3, 2009, 7:57PM EDTWell then, more power to you. As a young adult, maybe you have more of a chance to influence those of your own demographics. Are you at Tulane currently?
I had an anti-Obama sticker inside my window during Voodoo Fest and I've got to tell you I felt safer removing it until I was out of New Orleans. lol I definitely felt in the minority.
You might be interested in an article written by a friend of mine, Greg Reeson, someone who is also from New Orleans but is currently in Washington, DC : Being "American" Versus Global "Consensus"
It's appropriate for this weekend and I think you'll enjoy it. I also have a group called Michael Yon Dispatches that deals with military, foreign policy and conflict area issues. I'm very particular on ensuring the information in this group is as accurate as possible so, in order to keep informed our current conflicts worldwide, you may want to join the group.
I'll be watching you, Josh, and I'll be cheering you on.

Cathi L., Jul 3, 2009, 1:44PM EDTJosh, I admire your passion and your intelligence. You seem to be very clear on the direction you want to go. I was probably as passionate about the right and against the left until I realized how big the political machine is and how small my influence was in the world, especially if it is strictly debating politics on Gather.
Every article I wrote, and every debate I participated in, I saw the same people over and over again. Those that don't want to know will not participate, those that are on the left will push against those on the right and visa versa. Some will get to the point of ridiculous arguments just so they can believe they are correct.
Your view of convincing some people is very familiar to me. I don't know if this is the actual term, but I called it "The Butterfly Effect."
I viewed "The Butterfly Effect" as very important. If you change the view of just one person, that person may influence 2 or 3, then those people each may influence 2 or 3. Unfortunately that's only if you live in a vacuum and there are no other forces to stop that chain reaction.
I supported Bush as president, and still support, GW Bush as a person, but this last election, in my opinion, was in reality a choice between two candidates only, and neither were that great, however Obama was worse in my political leanings. Then I saw the machine at work and knew then there was no way to stop it. Obama would win. And he did, indeed, win.
How did that happen? I see one repeating reason as manipulation of the propaganda machine, and major use of technology. Blogging, texting, communicating, controlling so much that directly effects us at home, a direct flow of information right in your living room and office.
Who was the largest demographic group who favored Obama? Young adults! The Daily Show and The Cobert Report became actual news to them! They were repeating quotes that Tina Fey said and applied them to Sarah Palin. How many other times did this work?
I don't know the answer. I do believe a third party could possibly bring us into a new direction, a better direction, but who knows? All I know is that both sides manipulate, both sides lie, and this has been going on for decades. -
Len Maxwell, Jun 29, 2009, 7:59PM EDTI am so wrapped up in a major job right now and can't take the time to answer your drug post with the thought it requires. I'll be back online probably tomorrow and, I promise, I'll try and not sound like an idiot.
